Open Access Week Jargon: Your Guide

Open Access Week runs from October 19–25 and as the first open access scholarly press in Canada, we are here to prepare you. October 16th just so happened to be National Dictionary Day, so here are a few buzzwords that will be flying around the internet this week.

Open Access: a publishing model where content is made available for free with partial copyright restrictions. (All books published by AU Press are open access. You can download entire books or individual chapters on our website!)

OER (Open Educational Resources): Freely accessible and openly licensed online material for anyone to use for teaching, learning, and researching. Copyright licenses on these materials often allow anyone to remix, reuse, and repurpose.

Creative ComTeaching in Blended learning Environments covermons: A non-profit organization that has created a series of licenses for the use, reuse, and distribution of materials.

MOOC (Massively Open Online Courses): Online courses that are freely accessible to anyone. Check out this study for some fascinating stats on MOOCs in 2014.

Blended Learning: a combination of online and in-person learning which allows for personalized and independent study. Our book Teaching in Blended Learning Environments is the perfect guide if you are an educator who works in these environments.

LMS (Learning Management System): software that analyzes, manages, and runs educational programs or courses. Moodle or Blackboard are popular examples.

Stay tuned this week for more open access excitement. The theme for this year’s Open Access Week is “Open for Collaboration.”
