The Newsletter: June

Welcome to the June edition of The Newsletter!

Media

We started a new Instagram series last week and we hope that you’ll follow along! We’re taking our followers on an AU Press tour of Edmonton featuring our books about Edmonton! So far we have stopped at the Edmonton Journal, the High Level Bridge, the Gibson Block, and Grant Notley Park.

Events

We thought May was a crazy month for events but it turns out that June is just as wild. First, we had the amazing opportunity to hear stories from Athabasca University graduates at the annual convocation events held on campus. From 93-year-old Louisa Daley to three friends from Newfoundland, we were inspired by each AU graduate’s story. We recorded some stories to share with you and you can watch them over here.

The same weekend as convocation, our senior editor, Pamela Holway, spoke on a panel at the University of Alberta’s Writing Stick: Sharing Indigenous Stories conference. Pamela shared her experiences working on manuscripts by Indigenous authors and noted areas of growth needed in academic publishing.

Pamela also attended the Commonwealth Association of Museums conference where she heard about museum programming from a number of Commonwealth countries including Kenya, Canada, New Zealand, Turkey, and South Africa.

June 19–25 was #MuseumWeek—a virtual gathering of museums. We joined in on the fun and posted museum-related quotes and images from our gallery of books.

National Aboriginal Day was celebrated on June 21 and we acknowledged the day by sharing useful resources for continuing your education beyond this commemorative day. We dropped in at the Art Gallery of Alberta in the evening to check out Past Imperfect: A Canadian History Project, an exhibit that looks at the struggles and mistakes that have occurred throughout our nation’s history.

Throwback

Last June, we released Emergence and Innovation in Digital Learning edited by George Veletsianos. You can read our MOOCs and Moodle blog post here to learn about the book and to find some resources on education technology.
